Frequently Asked Questions
What LMS formats can I build from CourseCode Desktop?
CourseCode Desktop builds SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, and cmi5 packages. The same source project can also support a server-backed LTI 1.3 deployment. CourseCode Cloud can generate supported LMS downloads later from one universal deployment.
Is CourseCode Desktop free to use for course authoring?
Yes. CourseCode Desktop is a free, open-source desktop application for building e-learning courses. CourseCode Cloud is optional for hosted delivery, analytics, and team workflows.
Can I build SCORM courses without the command line?
Yes. Desktop provides buttons for creating projects, starting preview, building packages, and deploying. Its editor and optional AI workspace cover common content changes; advanced customizations may still involve editing the project source.
Does CourseCode Desktop work with my LMS?
CourseCode Desktop builds standards-based SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, and cmi5 packages, plus an LTI 1.3 integration path. LMS support and configuration vary, so confirm the accepted format and test the output in your target LMS before rollout.
Do I need CourseCode Cloud to use Desktop?
No. Desktop is local-first and works without a Cloud account. After the local tools and project dependencies are installed, you can author, preview, and build SCORM or cmi5 packages locally. Cloud adds hosted deployment, analytics, and team workflows.
What can AI do in Desktop?
Desktop includes an AI chat workspace that works with your local course files. Use it to draft slides, revise text, add interactions, and turn reference materials into course content. You can use your own API key or CourseCode Cloud credits.
What is cmi5 and why would I use it instead of SCORM?
cmi5 is an LMS launch profile built on xAPI. It can report richer statement data and does not use SCORM suspend-data limits, but it requires a cmi5-capable learning platform. CourseCode lets the same source project target cmi5 or SCORM.
Why does macOS or Windows warn about the installer?
The current macOS installer is not code signed or notarized, and the Windows installer is not code signed, so operating-system warnings may appear. Install only from coursecodedesktop.com or the official GitHub Releases and verify the published SHA256 checksum.
